Texas is one of those states that exudes a certain atmosphere. No Country For Old Men is the perfect example of using this dusty, bleak landscape to make the reader feel dusty and bleak!
I was especially interested in Larry McMurtry's bookstore in Archer City, Texas. That must be an amazing place. I read his Books: A Memoir, but I think I liked it more than you did. He talks about the bookstore in the book. That would be a great place to visit but I doubt I ever will--too off the beaten path.
Sandy - It really is. There are other states that blend together, but Texas is in a class of its own.

And yes, that atmosphere is very prevalent down here, too. Not a day goes by that I don't see a bumper sticker that says "SECEDE" or "I wasn't born in Texas but got here as fast as I could" or...
But you forgot to add "Texas" by Michener to your list! ;)
I SO want to read the Fallon book, especially as I have some friends and family members stationed at Fort Hood.

I had to send this to my mother-in-law immediately -- she's been in Arizona for 7 years now but is still Texas at heart. Such an amazing collection of books to showcase that big honkin' state.

Texas is also home to BookPeople in Austin, probably THE best independent bookstore in the world. You should definitely visit if you ever visit!!
And I agree with Trish, there is a lot of Texas pride down here.
Karen - Thanks! I definitely added that into the list of bookstores. I have a lot of family in Texas and so I need to make a trip there in the next few years to check out all the bookish awesomeness.
