Top Ten Books That Make You Think (About the World)

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

This week's Top Ten from The Broke and the Bookish asks for the Top Ten Books That Make You Think (About the World, People, Life, etc.). These are a few that made me think more about the world around me and the world we are creating for future generations. Some because they discuss prejudice or war, others because they look at what humans have accomplished through survival, education or exploration. I didn’t love every book equally, but they all made me think. All 10 books are ones that I would recommend if you want something that will make you explore a country or idea that might be a bit foreign to you.

1) Zeitoun

2) Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World (Ewan McGregor)

3) Behind the Beautiful Forevers

4) Unbroken

5) The Submission

6) War (Sebastian Junger)

7) Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

8) A Mighty Heart: The Inside Story of the Al Qaeda Kidnapping of Danny Pearl

9) Reading Lolita in Tehran

10) The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon

Reading Lolita in Tehran is a wonderful book that did make me think about the difficulties those women faced.

I like your list and have read about half of them. The rest are waiting in the wings. Almost any book by Tracy Kidder qualifies for me.

So many great books on this list. Loved Lost City of Z and was so bummed with the movie with Brad Pitt fizzled. I've been meaning to read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle for years...

This is a great topic area and you wrote a great list for it.

When I think of it, The Stand by Stephen King comes to mind (mostly because I'm reading it right now) and Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood.

Hrm, I definitely went the post-apocalyptic route... I really am much more positive!

Oooh yes, Zeitoun! Also, I'm surprised to see a Ewan McGregor book...I'm intrigued.

Anne - I thought it was fascinating to think about classic novels from the western world from the POV of a completely different culture.

annieb - I can't believe I've never read Tracy Kidder. I own about 5 of his books!

Trish - That is a bummer! Animal is interesting. I can't say I loved the tone of the book, but it did make me think seriously about where I buy my food, etc.

Nikki Steele - The Stand is a great one! And I think almost anything by Atwood would qualify.

Kat - It's been about 7 years since I read the McGregor book, but it's so interesting! He took this huge motorcycle trip around the world with his best friend and he talks about all the people he meets along the road.

Jenners - There's some thinkers in there!
