“What classic has most surprised you so far, and why?”
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, I thought it was going to be incredible dark and depressing, which I why I put off reading it for so long. Instead I was thrilled to discover a story of hope and overcoming obstacles. It was a wonderful reminder that the things we go through do not determine who we are. The way we react to them determines that.

I don't know anything about IKWtCBS but I thought it was poetry?
Me too! No it isn't poetry, it's her memoir of her childhood and it's told in a really accessible way.
I read I this book in high school and remember loving it. Maya Angelou has a beautiful way with words.
I haven't read this book in years, but parts of it still stick in my mind. I'd read it again in a heartbeat.
Whitney - You can definitely tell she's a poet, but it's not inaccessibly dense or flowery.
Bybee - Me too, I know I'll return to this one in the future.
I was in the same situation as you, dreading to read this work by Angelou. Now, at least, I'll the courage to read it sooner rather than later!
Patty - You definitely should! This morning I just found out she will be speaking in my city next month. I'm so excited!
I can't believe I've never read this book! And I'm pretty sure I own a copy... maybe I'll sneak it onto my list at some point :-)
Sarah - You should! I really loved it and I know I'll return to it.
