Top Ten Dogs from Literature

Tuesday, May 27, 2014

This week's Top Ten from The Broke and the Bookish is a freebie week, so I decided to pick my top ten dogs I love from different books.

1) Charley from Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley; a road-tripping dog.

2) The brilliant “watchdog” Tock from The Phantom Tollbooth

3) Odysseus’ dog Argos from The Odyssey; never stops hoping to see his master again.

4) Hagrid’s dog Fang from the Harry Potter series

5) Mr. Rochester’s dog Pilot from Jane Eyre

6) Crab from Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona

7) Kojak from The Stand; the most loyal pup ever.

8) Nana from Peter Pan, who wouldn’t want a nanny that’s a dog?

9) The Starks’ direwolves from Game of Thrones (I know they aren’t technically dogs)

10) Harold from the Bunnicula series.

I love dogs in literature, too! =D

I'd give an honourable mention to Woola from A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. He's technically not a canis familiaris, but he's so loyal and so lovable!

What a brilliant idea for a topic! I think my favourite dog would have to be Manchee in The Knife of Never Letting Go.

I'm not really a dog person and have never really given great dogs of literature much thought. Doesn't TinTin have a dog?

Oh, what Ellie said. Manchee the talking dog is the most memorable dog I've ever read about in a story, and the one who caused me the most heartbreak. Second to Manchee is Enzo from The Art of Racing in the Rain.

Great topic, I love dogs in fiction. I would definitely put Fang, Nana and the direwolves on my list. I'd love to have my own direwolf! Here's my TTT, I went with my favourite mind-blowing endings.

BRILLIANT idea for a post! I love love love this! But I hate it when authors kill the dogs off. Grrr!

Enbrethiliel - I haven't read that one, but now I'm curious!

Ellie - Oh Manchee, I loved that dog.

52booksorbust - Ha, I have no idea, but I'll have to check.

Sandy - Manchee will always be memorable to me, but his story makes me so sad.

Reviews from a Bookworm - There are so many great canine friends in books!

Andi - Oh my gosh me too! It always breaks my heart!

What a fun list idea! I (like some of your other readers) thought immediately of Manchee from THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO, but I love all of your picks.

Interesting list! I like novels that portray the special relationship between human beings and our pets. The two dogs that have stuck with me over the years are the ones in Where the Red Fern Grows (I cried so much!).

Great idea, great list. No Buck from Call of the Wild, though? :-)

Trish - I can't believe I left Manchee off the list!

bkclubcare - I can't imagine a more loyal dog than Kojak.

JoAnn - We've taken our dog on a few road trips now and I always think of Charley!

Cecelia - He definitely should have made the list!

misfortuneofknowing - I love that book so much! It broke my heart!

bibliophilica - Oh Buck, that's a great one!
