Top Ten Most Vivid Worlds/Settings In Books

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

This week's Top Ten from The Broke and the Bookish asks for my top ten most vivid worlds/settings in books. I’m going to list the top 5 I love and top 5 I hate.

Best Fictional Worlds
1) Harry Potter’s world: I know this will be on everyone’s lists, but I can’t help it. I can’t wait to visit Hogwarts and Hogsmeade at the new amusement park in Florida because Rowling created such an unforgettable place!

2) Avonlea: L.M. Montgomery’s quiet community has always held a special pull for me. I know Prince Edward Island is real and I feel like if I visit I’ll see Anne playing with Diana in a field.

3) Narnia: I’ve read the whole series multiple times and it’s such a fascinating world. We witness its creation in the Magician’s Nephew and return many times as decades pass throughout the seven books.

4) Middle-Earth: From Rivendell to Mordor, Tolkien went into insane detail describing the fellowship of the ring’s surroundings as they journeyed through the fictional world.

5) Pern: McCaffrey’s world is one filled with dragons and … wait for it… they’re your friends! That would be just awesome.

Worst Fictional Worlds:
1) Fahrenheit 451: They burn books! It is illegal to read! Need I say more?

2) The Handmaid’s Tale: Just about the worst fate for women that I can imagine.

3) Ready Player One: The world is horrible and everyone sits in front of a computer playing video games. The book itself is fun, but the world created within it would be awful.

4) V for Vendetta: Big Brother on steroids, this would not be fun.

5) It’s a tie for the final spot – The Stand and The Road: Both provide equally abhorrent living situations in a post-apocalyptic world.

Great list! Ever since I read the Anne of Green Gables series, when I was about 10, I've wanted to visit Prince Edward Island. :-)

I love that you split your list like that!

How did Perelandra not make this list?! I'm appalled!

I haven't read The Stand, but The Road was pretty hardcore hard to chew down.

I love the division into best and worst worlds. Handmaid's Tale definitely would be the absolute worst in my opinion, although some of the others would be no picnic either.

You have the best lists, and yes of course you have to have Harry on there. I just draw blanks when I think about these questions.

I just wrote about getting to visit Harry Potter world in Florida...the only complaint we had was that it wasn't bigger!

Yes, those dystopian worlds. I have chosen not to read The Road, because I don't think I can take it. And that probably indicates how well done it is.

I love that you flipped the theme around at the end. I totally agree about the worlds in The Handmaid's Tale and The Stand. Terrifying!

L.M. Montgomery made my list too! I can't believe I didn't think of Avonlea...so idyllic!

Oh Avonlea! Prince Edward's Island is still my top destination if I ever go to Canada. It's the perfect country village.

Oooo, Handmaid's Tale would be terrible to live in. Good choice.

Stephanie - Me too! I just finished Rilla and it made me want to visit so much!

Sarah - I kept thinking of places I wouldn't want to be, so it worked.

JReiss - Ha, I'm sure I forgot a ton of places!

Beth D. - They're both pretty bleak.

LBC - That book is so good, but the world within it is terrible.

Sandy - I'm a list girl, they're so fun.

Jeanne - Jealous! I'm hoping to go sometime in the next couple years.

Amy - It's not a fun book.

Mandy - I realized there are probably more bad locations than good in fiction.

Kat - Avonlea is such a wonderful fictional place.

Alex - Yes! It's definitely at the top of my wanderlust list.

Nicole - I can't even imagine a world that horrible.

I love that you did bad and good … and I agree with your list.

On my best fictional world list would also be Mitford (Jan Karon's series), Pickax (The Cat Who series), and - although not from a book - Cicely, Alaska from Northern Exposure. I would pack my bags and move to any one of these places in a heartbeat if I could!

Anon - I don't think I've heard of any of those! Clearly I need to check them out.
