Top Ten Favorite Kick-Ass Heroines

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

This week's Top Ten from The Broke and the Bookish asks for your Top Ten Favorite Kick-Ass Heroines. The women on my list are ones who decided not to be victims. They are women who are smart and clever and aren’t afraid to let people know that. These are women who bucked societal norms and did their own thing. They are all my heroes.

1) Jo March (Little Women)

2) Hermione Granger (Harry Potter series)

3) Lisbeth Salander (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series)

4) Valentine Wiggin (Ender’s Game series)

5) Katniss Everdeen (Hunger Games series)

6) Eowyn (Lord of the Rings)

7) Dagny Taggart (Atlas Shrugged)

8) Violet Baudelaire (A Series of Unfortunate Events)

9) Anne Shirley (Anne of Green Gables series)

10) Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice)

Great list, and Jo March at #1. Great just got better!

That is an awesome list! And she is all proper and everything, but Elizabeth Bennet is totally kick ass.

Love these. Despite most of Atlas Shrugged bugging me, I though Dagny was pretty great.

Elizabeth Bennet will always be my favorite. So feisty--I love it.

Fantastic list. I also included Hermione, Katniss and Lizzie Bennet on my list. I wish I'd thought to add Anne Shirley!

Eowyn is a good choice. I think Arwen fought battles just as hard, but she is clearly less kick-ass.

It's great seeing Valentine Wiggin on your list - definitely not the standard choice, but she certainly fits in.

Really wish I would've thought of Jo March and Elisabeth Bennet! We both have Dagney, though. Yea! :D My TTTs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Tuesday! :D

How did I forget to include Jo Marsh on my list!?! Awesome list of ladies :)

Somehow people started seeing Atlas Shrugged as completely aligned with the Republican party and because it was a political thing, half of people don't have to like it? It's been very annoying.

I'm sorry, but I'm left-leaning and I still want to get a "What Would Dagny Do?" tattoo on my forearm ;)

Ach! I forgot Eowyn! She's my all-time fave heroine. Thanks for the reminder.

Bybee - Jo is so fantastic!

Sandy - She totally is. Maybe she's a little judgemental, but I can't help but love someone who is so dedicated to her sister's happiness.

Kristi - Exactly, I couldn't believe what a strong, independent woman Dagny was since the book was published in the 1950s! She defied all the gender stereotypes of that time period.

Melissa - I love Anne, but my appreciation for her strength really grew as I read the whole series. She went through a lot!

Jeanne - I agree, I wavered between the two for this list.

Biblibio - Re-reading Ender's Game recently made her immediately come to mind.

Liesel - You have a great list too!

Kat - There are so many great ones I forgot too!

Nikki - That would make such a great tattoo! Isn't it funny how books can be used as politcal platforms decades after their publication. I always wonder what the author would think about it if they are dead.

melissa - That moment when she rips her helmet off and tells the witch king, "I am no man!" I love it so much.

Lovely list! I agree with most of your selections, and have a special place in my heart for a few of them... *cough*Hermione*cough*

Thanks for sharing!

Yay Anne Shirley!! I just adored her as a child and appreciate her so much more as an adult.

My cousin has a major girl crush on Lisbeth Salander. Major. Ha! :) Fun list.

Cecelia - I love her so much too.

Micheline D - We shared quite a few!

Trish - Me too, Anne is the best. I think Lisbeth gets that a lot.
